In recent years, plant biotechnology has emerged as an exciting area of research by creating unprecedented opportunities for the manipulation of biological systems of plants. This book has been written to meet the needs of students for biotechnology courses at various levels of undergraduate and graduate studies. For understanding biotechnology, it is essential to know the basic aspects of gene and its organization in the genome of plant cells. Plant tissue culture and recombinent DNA technology constitutes an important aspect of plant biotechnology. The book covers all the important aspects of plant tissue culture viz. laboratory organization, nutrition media, micropropagation, organ culture, cell suspension culture, anther culture, somatic fusion, secondary metabolite production, somaclonal variation and cryopreservation. Different aspects of rDNA technology are covered, e.g. gene cloning, gene transfer methods, PCR, molecular markers, genome mapping, and genomics. Application of biotechnology has been discussed as trangenics in crop improvement and its patenting as intellectual property rights. In most of the chapters, protocols for conducting laboratory exercises, application of tehnique and its contribution and impact on crop improvement have been given.
